if you have ever done research into public health, or have a friend in the field, you already know this
if "the powers that be" could simply change behavior, all the american poor would be dead or in jail for life as free labor
and all the jobs for poor people would be filled by terrified "illegal" migrant workers
that this isnt the case ~yet~
and wasnt the case centuries ago
says something about how hard behavior change is
a youtube video does not change lawn habits
everyone into lawn care simply has to die eventually, of old age
while their kids and grandkids are unable to afford houses with lawns
that's how it changes
in time with time over time
anecdotally can someone say: now wait just a minute, ma'am, i sent this video to my uncle and he never liked mowing in the first place so this video was all he needed
sure
great. share a youtube link, change the world
giving someone a reason, who wanted to anyway, hardly qualifies as behavior change
an example of behavior change: someone fervently anti-masking, anti-vaccine, coming around to feeling ok about it and even good about it, no decisional regrets, didnt feel pressured, simply feels more educated, safer, and grounded
that is behavior change in public health
that means the messaging, the public comms, were successful
tell me how many people there are who can say that re: covid
from the start the aerosol thing was a disaster. shouldve said: airborne
i get not wanting to start a mass panic but aerosol was too complicated
airborne with poor range
airborne with falloff
wouldve been worth trying
public health behavior change is not brainwashing or propaganda
it is realizing there isnt a monster under the bed and there is a nightlight available to use.
