I ate a fucking tomahawk ribeye for dinner. First time I've cooked meat on a barbecue grill in quite some time. Worked great, seared, then indirect heat for a while to finish it.

Got it for cheep at walmart. Steal of the weekend!

That's exactly what I do, too. It's not cheap, but it's better for the price anywhere else in my area.

My supermarket price limit on beef if $7/lb. If it is under $7, I buy. Over $7? Better be something I really want for some reason. This met my price, simple enough.

Sure, it is bone in, but I do the same for bone-in ribeyes, so there is precedent. Not cheap, but not over my limit. #carnivore doesn't have to be expensive, even with some nicer variety of cuts/meats thrown in.

That's not a bad limit, but... I can't get much beef for less than $7 here.

I am in beef country and seem to have better prices than most people

I can't really get steaks for under $7/lb (although I can reliably get ground beef or patties)

My main source of beef comes in around $10-11 per pound

I eat beef all the time though, not willing to wait for a clearance item

This is aggressively shopping the weekly ads, digital deals, member deals, and "manager special" or other discount bins of Kroger and Safeway (actually bought by Kroger, but still operating separately here for now). When I do find something, I buy as much as they have on the shelf, or according to their deal limit, and put it in the freezer. I routinely buy roasts and cut them into steak myself. I don't buy thin-cut.

This approach doesn't work at most discount grocers (WinCo, Grocery Outlet, etc) because they just don't offer the big sale discounts on top of what they think of as already discounted. It doesn't work at Costco either, as they don't have to market sales aggressively. Their volume allows them to set a fair price, but a higher price than I want to pay.

I'm planning to start buying from a local rancher as well, and will pay more for it. This will make me even more picky about what I choose to pick up at the supermarket. Lately it has been chuck roast, london broil, and petite sirloin. None of that is super great, but it gets me through the week, and is better, in my opinion, than mince.

Chuck steaks have good flavor

I'm typically spending $10-11 / pound for grass-fed ribeye (Aldi) and grass-fed picanha (local butcher)
