Just a thought, but would it work to actually have SVG data in the event?
Then the emojis wouldn't be dependent upon a image hosted somewhere, wouldn't require another connection, expose your IP to another random server, etc?
I'd imagine svg data for most emoji sized icons would be tiny.
Do we have replaceable key:value nip like the lists nip?

Thinking about it some more, this can be much simpler. Could just do :plebchain: in the body which would reference a tag “emoji-plebchain” that contains the emoji image url.
Whenever your client sees a custom emoji like this it can add it to its local emoji library for use.

Yes. Love the colon-pair method of typing special characters. I don’t remember if this was slack’s innovation, but it’s become muscle memory.
Please if possible make these things optional in future releases. Stuff like show more on my timeline or now upcoming jpegs behind hashtags. Just make it an option in the settings to turn on/off 🙏
