Is there any point running a node for just a few hours each day?
Or would it do more harm than good, as it has to download hours of data each time it comes back online?

Node uptime is important. Every time you turn the node off, you drop connection with all the other nodes. When you turn it back on, it takes many hours to regain those connections.
