It’s lame but my opinion is if they can’t be trusted with figuring out an open dime and you don’t want to use a custodial solution like river then I would t bother because the money will be lost. Lots of people have stories like this and it’s a bummer.

Haha, honestly, then so be it. The other option was to give them a wine aerator. I think this is more meaningful, definitely more valuable and the chances that they keep it are higher than the chances that they lose it. Worst case it's a bummer and a funny(ish) story. And realistically, they're both pretty responsible people.

But as you say this it makes me think... of all the options I type out here, setting them up with a blue wallet, making 2 seeds (one for me and one for them) and holding it until THEY withdraw it and take custody is probably the best move to avoid lost btc. I did say I refused to get them a hardware wallet too but maybe I just bite the bullet and splurge on it 🤔 basically forces them to self custody and learn the minimum required to do so

A multisig wallet with some Bitcoin is actually a great metaphor for a marriage. I gifted my oldest friend and his bride Bitcoin in a 2 of 3 multisig setup. They can only access their Bitcoin together, it's impenetrable, and what it protects grows in value over time. I think they probably valued the letter more than the multisig setup.

That said, I wrote seven pages of instructions on how to rebuild and use their multisig. I wouldn't be surprised if the next time I visit, they ask I set it up for them.

I did only test is now but I plan something similar. I run a LNbits instance and you have an extension LNURLw that generate withdrawal QR code (scan to withdraw sats to any lightning wallet). One option allows to generate vouchers that you can print, fold and glue to hide the QR code and you have instruction and must tore down the glued part to see the QR.

Then they can either withdraw the sats to their wallet (Phoenix, Breez, Blixt, WoS...) or if they don't scan with a wallet, it will open a custodial account for them on your LNbits instance.

You are the uncle jim bank, keep the sats for them until they withdraw them, and you can offer them to keep the sats even further for future sats they become on your instance.

This is fun! Love the tear-to-reveal. I don't run a LNbits instance unfortunately but maybe I look into this and figure out how to tear to reveal their seed . I'm pretty crafty haha

I just got notified that you can do something similar without LNbits, but it's more intended to give tips as you can fund cards on the go before handing them over and recover the sats if unused after a certain amount of time: https://tipcards.io/

I guess it's custodial but I didn't try yet.
