We are lucky coming from bitcoin, and understanding pitfalls of something that seemingly makes sense, such as a "foundation". I don't think there has ever been an open protocol that became hardened against centralising forces more than bitcoin. It's a unique experience that equips us well for building something like nostr.
Bitcoin is a litmus test for sure. I’ve found lots of engagement in other spaces to be particularly hypocritical, selective outrage and in turn bring out the worst in me (I know the algo has a role to play as well).

it's very important to understand two things about how to go about this:
- you must learn how to recognise psychopathic manipulation behaviour in individuals, and test the people you encounter who express interest in the project you are building, are not engaging in trolling, psychological manipulation of any kind. these people destroy the viability of any kind of group, most groups in wider society end up infiltrated with them and their evil behaviour destroys the project or coopts it into something opposite what you intend
- without those people involved there is no need for formal structures and constructs because everyone who is not corrupted like this, naturally seeks to correct their mistakes and speaks openly with other members about concerns. without this, cohesion is impossible, and non-psychopathic minds are uniquely capable of this, thus, the "social contract" is enforced by members of the project both internally within themselves and externally by communicating with other members
