It appears that what has already happened with Stable Diffusion and AI image generation, may be a preview of what is currently happening with LLMs.
Open source may completely dominate the AI ecosystem as time passes.

Midjourney still better than SD imo
True, but I’ve gotten some pretty slick stuff to come out of SD running locally where i can tweak stuff. The prompts are more complex and less intuitive though.
Eh, depends on the models and prompting. Midjourney, imo, is a better tool for broad range image generation, but SD seems to take the medal on custom and highly specific image generation and the array of models available makes it harder to use, but incredibly powerful if you know what you are looking for.
Yup, but double edged sword that open source can't be turned off
This is our best defense from getting siloed into a dystopic future where AI is caged and manipulated by highly politicized, centralized institutions. This is the *best* thing about it and the only way to avoid the future that everyone seems scared of, imo.
