I think I like the idea of trending and recommendations being user-definable client options. I think that strikes a good balance between the utility of those features with the necessity of user control and ownership of data. I don't think we have to choose one or the other. We can have both!

it's held up by how long its progenitors can convince that flood of fiat to continue, which is kinda messed up, being that such persuasion can be malicious

That's fine. They're free to implement or not implement whatever features they want. But then they can't complain if users start flocking to other clients with the features, or start demanding that they add it to their client. It's a free market.
