A reminder that all modern nation-states were produced by centralizing governments imposing linguistic, ethnic, and/or religious homogeneity on extremely diverse populations.

The idea of “nations” governing themselves seems liberating, until you start to ask, “What is a nation?”

It's about a group (people with the same set goal) setting certain standards(for language, religion etc). You say government imposes but it's the group itself that chooses to do this.

If you pull in too many from an outgroup, the system/group either reinvents itself or breaks.

I guess eventually you come to a point where splinter factions within the group rival eachother. The only outcome might only eventually be violence.

An outstanding, well expressed observation; thank you.🙏😁
