My following count is decreasing every day. But I haven’t unfollowed anyone by purpose. Seems to be a bug in the contact list. Other clients than Damus show larger followings, interestingly. 🤔

In my limited nostr understanding this might be connected to the set of relays that you use. Some might go offline temporarily, some go offline forever. All the following events that were stored there and nowhere else are now lost.
Is my logic plausible? nostr:npub1mhcr4j594hsrnen594d7700n2t03n8gdx83zhxzculk6sh9nhwlq7uc226 nostr:npub1794vv7hl7y6q2qw0y7m7h60rpphmvt5h7pzt5sr78z6assj6w0eqagwjhd
There’s note kind 3 which contains your contact list. This kind is updated by relays which receive an update so should have the most up to date view if it was online when you last updated your following list. Followers works differently, it’s determined based on other users contact lists.
Strange your following list would fluctuate. 🤔
By updated by relays I mean it keeps your latest one, not all previous ones.
I saw this happen too, not sure what caused it, but I went from almost 80 followers to less than 30, but now I'm back up to 70 something..
I see similar. When using Iris, it only shows 3 followers and about 15 relays recently disappeared from my list (think there was an update in that it all coincided with). But when I check on other clients, everything is how it should be.
Yeah, you can't rely on clients to count your number of followers, they would need to parse every contact list on all nostr relays and add up all the ones that have you in it.. you can imagine the phone trying to do this is not going to work.. only aggregators like nostr.band or primal stand a chance of getting this number for you.
I am talking about my own contact list, not my followers.
Ah, ok then if you're seeing differences in the clients this can be bad.. (don't click follow). It's your set of relays is different and if you aren't connected to the right ones you'll lose follows.
If you want a command line tool to help backup or potentially rescue your contacts you can try this one I wrote.
Followers are a shitcoin metric.... they say....
I am talking about my own contact list, not my followers.
Your following count shouldn’t really be affected it’s just a matter of what relays you are connected to.
