I've never played a roguelike...

What should I play first? (Should be free and easy to install).

Nethack?

Caves of Qud? (Apparently there is a legal and free version)

Brogue?

....something else?

Iuno which but I hope you will like them. Prepare for dying again and again.

Which is your favourite(s)?

Slay the spire is damn good, card game with a lot of depth and community mods. Been enjoying Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 recently, and of course there's hades which I thoroughly enjoyed

Oh, missed the part about it being free

Still good to know

I know you are asking for a free rogueline, but Caves of Qud has to be one of the greatest games of all time. I don't know anything about this free version you are talking about, but the game is so epic, it is worth the sats.

Seems to be an old Caves of Qud which is free, but that might be fine by me:)

Have you heard of Dwarf Fortress?

Yeah, I was wondering if that would be a good place to start as a total beginner to the format

Oh boy, not sure. I tried the free version, and couldn't get into the interface.

Also not free, but if you want a roguelike that is simple to play, hard to master, and is a ton of fun, check out Legend of Dungeon.

Yeah that looks like it is very old, but there should still be Jopa and the first bit up to Golgotha, so you can get a feel for it before purchasing the full version. CoQ just won a Hugo Award, if you hadn't heard about that here's a link:

Definitely Caves of Qud. I also recommend Tales of Maj'Eyal if you want something more old school (it also has a free version)

The other one also comes up a lot as a recommendation

+1 for shattered pixel dungeon. I'm really bad at it, but I like it. My wife is really good and she loves it

It's a great, actually free, Android game 👍

And open source

This is good for your GBA emulator too.
