I've never played a roguelike...

What should I play first? (Should be free and easy to install).

Nethack?

Caves of Qud? (Apparently there is a legal and free version)

Brogue?

....something else?

Definitely Caves of Qud. I also recommend Tales of Maj'Eyal if you want something more old school (it also has a free version)
