This was me a couple years ago after having fun with a node and then realizing how foolish it was to keep tens of millions of sats online in a hot wallet 24/7 just so I could send and receive a few thousand sats here and there. πŸ˜‚

😬 This is not how we win, sir.

Bitcoiners set an unrealistic and unnecessarily high bar for adoption when they demand 100% self custody in regards to lightning. That is how we lose. How we win is by being reasonable and responsible with what we advise others to do.

1000%. If you aren't a sysadmin expert, you probably should not be running an LN node. You're at way higher risk of fucking something up than getting rug pulled by a custodial wallet

Yea. Not a node runner. Non custodial lightning address is hard. Tried to make sense of Zeus. Gave up and settled on Mutiny+, only to discover that fedimint just got borked. Guess I’m still stuck using kyc custodial wallet.

Everyone has their own risk analysis and trade /offs.

For me I just stick to this personal program for the time being since time is of my upmost importance.

There is a lot more I could add to this but you get the point. πŸ˜‚

Alby has a self-custody feature launching soon that will put it in the middle category.

I think changing the verbiage on how we define each sector of security is beneficial to the education of the users.

Mostly what we lack is differentiation when we talk β€œwallets” to new users. I feel the analogies are better serving.

That’s because there is not really a 1:1 comparison between the digital world and their physical counterparts. Every instance of the word β€œwallet” in relation to bitcoin is inaccurate, yet it still persists after 15 years because we don’t have anything else to call it that anyone will understand.

Yeah... I get the most use out of my lightning node for DCA so I don't need to buy big amounts or do consolidation tx. Much easier.

I mostly run my routing node so I have liquidity ready to go when I want to use it. Custodial lightning is too expensive.

Expensive taxes you say?

Phoenix, Breez and Zeus offer non-custodial without channel management. Just open one channel large enough for your monthly Bitcoin Lightning expenses and refill it once empty using swap from your on-chain cold storage wallet or another intermediate hot or cold wallet like you topup a Revolut card or similar.

That's the best of both world between a Bitcoin full node with Lightning routing node and cusodial lightning.

You could also run a full node and juste open a couple of unannonnced channels with the amounts you need to spend. You can even use BTCPay Server + Breez SDK or LNbits + Phoenixd for auto-channel management. There are options for every use cases and scenarios.

If you need, you can use mine. πŸ€™

You just need to register without KYC and you're ready to receive sats.
