its because it is essentially unregulated everywhere. in the US, it's now just a fee.

ham would be slammed if you could just pay a fee.

Since the same frequencies are used for FRS, you don't even need that. It's not like there's a rule preventing FRS and GMRS folks from responding to one another.

True, but the power levels and hardware on those frequencies are different. Frs is very low wattage. Gmrs has repeaters and can go 25 and up to 50watts. Frs limit is 2 watts.

Haha, that's what I've been playing around with. It's very beginner friendly & works well enough for community type distances. I was told ham people would make fun of me I mentioned it lol

Interesting, I have my GMRS call sign and have rarely ever had a chance to use it. Although I've used my ham call quite often.
