Swale installation for a client. We did a total of 3 swales to help slow and infiltrate the water on their property. They plan on planting up the berm side with various berries and other medicinal plants. I’m pumped to see the foundation of their food forest go from idea to action.

The ‘red’ dirt looks very familiar…

Home of the red man 😄

Looks like pretty sandy soil. Sounds like a cool project

Yep, they had a pretty good mix of sandy clay soil. That family will have great success with whatever they plant.

Not one drop of water will escape those swales!

I’ve asked him to send me some pics and vids after it rains. Excited to see!

What kinda machinery do you prefer to use for this work? I have to dig a mile or so of swales this year for a contract I got on my property.

For smaller projects like this I use an A-frame I built a few years ago to mark contour. Then follow the line with a walk behind tiller to loosen the soil. Once loose, you can easily use a square shovel to “pump and dump” the soil on the downhill berm. You can get pretty accurate this way. Anything longer than 100-200ft is recommend a tractor or skid steer. Unless you have a few other people to help.

Very nice

Thank you!
