This is 💯 correct. The zap event can be displayed by any client, there are a few on the web (and plebstr) where you can tap to view who they were and how much, etc.
It would affect your feed only.

For Damus, thegreatest zap is now displayed at the top of threads. My question was, could Damus make this optional so that other clients don’t see this event displayed at the top of a thread.
Turning off zap comments, so that companies and politicians can’t post links in zap comments would be nice too.

The events have always been there. Damus is just rendering them.
They don’t appear in plebstr.
Tbf this needs a toggle. I’m not going to use a client where there’s dozens of ads attached to high profile posts. But, that’s why they call it test flight.

No damus can't, it'd have to be able to censor nostr.

It's just displaying/sorting events differently. You can't stop people from displaying data on nostr however they like.
Oh, Okay. I’m asking for optional sorting of the data, so that I can sort it the way I want, not to stop someone from sending it.
