Saylor says that "A node is a shrine to Satoshi". As for why it's important... in my opinion:
1. "don't trust, verify" is only possible if you're running your own node. (Ultimately there will always be some trust, unless you've read all the code, read all the code in the included libraries, read the code for your compiler, compiled the compiler yourself, manufactured your own silicon). But in my opinion the act of validating the blockchain yourself with software you control on hardware you control is a fundamental bedrock principal of taking actual possession of your wealth with bitcoin.
Beyond that, if you want to have some say about which version of bitcoin is the real one then you must run your own node. When you are explaining the 21 limit to someone and they say "why can't someone just create more" you fully understand the answer... because you would simply refuse to run that code on your node. If you really understand why the limit is 21 million, you would be running your own node as a result.
Well I get that…
I get your second paragraph aswell… but not to the fullest. I know about hard forks and all that, but the reason on why the limit is 21 million I’m not sure about…
