I fully agree with @rabble about the possibility of exploring custodial keys for a more GA audience set of users who are not used to keys, browser extensions, etc.

One of the onboarding experiences I’ll be exploring in the new Highlighter (which I think we’ll onboard a whole new set of people to nostr) is the idea of allowing them to login with email and password, something they are already widely familiar with, explaining very clearly the trade offs, and using the password to encrypt theiR nsec on the nsecBunker.

This is a great idea … I’ve onboarded friends but there’s two places where they get lost … the nsec/npub & choosing / explaining relays … those are their pain points

People are more used to phone number logins than email these days. No one cares about their email account.

Really? I’ve never seen that, and you get like an SMS or something?

Nah, SMS is too insecure. They get it on a HIPAA-compliant FAX machine.

This sounds interesting . Did some test onboarding today with a family member on an app I’m making. Keys made them uncomfortable and was a big pain point. The extension for zaps was a stretch too far also on initial sign-up (poor UX design by me) Username + password + confirmation email so familiar to most! They asked for their keys by email 🧐

You could even do Login with Facebook, Login with Google, any OAuth, Not saying that it is a good idea, but it is possible, if you want to reach a different audience.

The lightsats.com guys use phone or email for normies. Lightning login for those that know.

Question what is highlighter?

Haha, also heard that and quickly moved it waaay up on the todo-list ;)

Would there be a way incorporate zaps in a similar fashion?

yup 😉

i was rather disturbed about nostr:npub1wmr34t36fy03m8hvgl96zl3znndyzyaqhwmwdtshwmtkg03fetaqhjg240's idea for blocking on nostr, the idea that all clients would collectively censor users out of some supposed 'code of honor' is just disgusting, a typical woke perversion of words too
