Cashu is for those services which don't need federations (99% of all services in the world). What you get is a open, well-tested ecash protocol to build your product on.

And that's what people are already doing.

The only part I don’t understand about cashu, if it runs on lightning, why not just use lightning?

Question comes from a lack of understanding really, not skepticism.
