Not sure which client you are using. Some clients allow you to turn off unpaid relays for your universe feed.
You’ll reduce spam, and noise at the expense of reducing new profiles you might otherwise discover through the universe feed.
I don't find I really get much or any spam to begin with.
I have never turned off any relays, but I have paid for a few. I know the Wine relay includes a filter aspect along with it.
Might that be filtering out the spam for me or something?

We’re all frontiersmen here, and learning as we go. I dont have all the answers!
Yeah the hypothesis is that spammers won’t pay thousands of sats for paid relays.
So if a relay is paid to write, you could expect significantly lower spam/noise over free to write relays.
If spam is not a problem for you, this is a good thing.
If you want to discover new content, and users you could experiment my adding relays you haven’t used, at risk of increasing your spam/noise.
Another method is to use a note discovery tool outside your client like zaplife.lol to check the most zapped notes, and users.
With time I expect many clients to implement notes by zaps, as opposed to chronological order.
Note having a big number of relays (for me more than 15) could affect your client performance, warm your phone, and/or drain your battery.
