So the solution is for everyone to open channels to their top 100 most used merchants and hope that makes it worthwhile?

Opening that many channels is kind of expensive and risky (hot wallet), not sure that is the answer.

For an average LN node, those routing fees are very small and don’t compensate all the effort and time required to run the LN node.

Yes, the fees have to rise for it to be worthwhile. Remeber the benefit of running an ln node is proportional to the fees you save too.

If like me, you make a lot of bitcoin trqnsactions it pays for itself.
