Adoption of what? People have never been onboarded if they are not on the Bitcoin ship, but only see an entry in a database. That's standing right next to the ship and watching it sail away.
Adoption is to accompany them on their way onto the ship via the stairs directly into the ship's interior.

It’s not WOS it’s your government.
My government is garbage, I’m well aware of that. But you can’t really say you’re onboarding anyone onto bitcoin by giving them a centralized payment app that merely denominates their balance in sats.
Most of them will never withdraw it to anything else, and one day they might wake up and realize it was all taken away from them. I don’t want to see that.
This isn’t about good vibes. It’s about learning the difference between an unregulated bank and a self-regulating protocol.
But it was good enough, for the last ten months while on-boarding your servers at restaurants? Why the epiphany now?
I love you guys, many of my relatives are Americans, but the world doesn’t revolve around you. There are so many tools that aren’t allowed in my jurisdiction and many around the world use custodial solutions at the outset of their journey down the rabbit hole. I am one such individual.
It’s a nuanced issue. Do you think I should teach 12-18 year olds to run their own lightning nodes? Or my 65 year old uncle and auntie?
Custodial solutions serve a very important purpose and are a stepping stone in the education and evolution of burgeoning bitcoiners and I’m not sure going to the end of the evolution is the wisest way to educate new users. It’s worked for me in only a few instances.
You are correct.
I should not have suggested WoS to people, and I regret it. Many of us made that mistake.
However, I always recommended everyone to study bitcoin if they were interested, and learn how to move their sats to a wallet with their own keys.
These are hard things to explain, and in our enthusiasm for demonstrating bitcoin, we can lose sight of the most important issues.
We are in a war, and most people don’t even realize it.
So you’re recommending I teach my nephews, who are 12, to run their own lightning node? Or my uncle who lives in a rural area, without high speed internet, to hold his own keys for a wallet that contains 20$?
I agree with your sentiment, but let’s be realistic.
I can’t tell anyone what to do. However I do think that the most important part of the onboarding process is to help others understand the “why” of bitcoin before the “how.”
If they don’t understand its purpose they might just forget about it and then you’re basically just throwing sats away. I’ve done that too many times.
People will only want it if they get it.
But you are telling people what to do. You’ve been telling people what to do for the past two days.

Everyone has freedom to choose. You don’t aren’t forced listen to or follow anything I say. But I still have the freedom to say it. People ask for advice and I offer it. Why does this bother you?

My reason for the anti-#zapathon (I didnt expect it to become so controversial!) was to avoid zapping to any WoS wallets because they could be going into a black hole, especially if the users were in the US who might not be able to get their money out. I’ve seen quite a few people complaining that the app isn’t working for them today or they can’t withdraw. That’s pretty alarming.
We spent months doing the #zapathon to stress-test and improve nostr:npub1hcwcj72tlyk7thtyc8nq763vwrq5p2avnyeyrrlwxrzuvdl7j3usj4h9rq. I have defended them in the past for being both good actors and true OGs in this space, especially in terms of the Lightning network.
I think their actions over the past couple of days have been poorly communicated and show a panic response as opposed to a responsible service wind-down.
But what if it wasn’t? Do you know for sure?
What if, they got wind of something that was coming, or they assessed the sentiment of the current environment, and rather than risk being caught up in something where US users actually lost their funds, they decided to pull their app instead? What if this was the reason, and they can’t say anything about it, due to the sensitivity of their source?
I’m just spitballing here, but it’s felt very one sided over the past two days, without anyone truly knowing the facts. I’ve known you for 10 months, and have never seen anything but good vibes from you, so please don’t misinterpret my notes. I’m simply trying to engage in a discussion and present a narrative that no one seems to be exploring. 🫂💜
I’m not one to intentionally spread FUD. It could be that they are in Australia and the time difference got in the way. But they pulled out of the app stores before making an announcement that didn’t give any specific details as to why they made this decision, which leads to a lot of speculation. Nobody really knows anything about their financial condition. Their behavior reminds me of what I’ve seen from other companies that have turned out to be running scams in the past. I’m not suggesting that’s what’s happening here, but I think they owe this community who has done all their word-of-mouth marketing for them more a lot more transparency than we’re getting.
I disagree. I don’t think they owe a bunch of random people on nostr an explanation for their business strategy. 😜😂 . But that’s the beauty, we can disagree 🤝.
The timing was also right after Binance got spanked. Maybe you’re right and I’m wrong. The point I’m trying to make, is that we don’t know 🤷♂️ and custodial solutions have been very effective for me in teaching new users about bitcoin and lightning.
If your bank, which in this case they are acting as a bank, shut down abruptly and didn’t give you a reason, and then told you to take your money out as soon as possible, and when you tried, the doors were locked and the ATM was limiting withdrawal amounts, would you feel you were owed an explanation? Oh, and this was also a bank you were really excited to tell people you used and you wanted to invite them to use it too.
