iPhone people: I have a normie friend who uses an iPad heavily. The iPad is out of storage. What is the easiest way to free up their space, which is mostly made up of photos? Some sort of external HDD to backup stuff? I am totally out of the Apple loop

Push it off to iCloud Photos. It will free up on-device storage.

Might be time to set up a personal cloud server?

I can’t imagine saving that many photos.

I would assume they can all be transferred to a pc or external hd.

(I should know more since I’m iOS only for the most part but I do t save photos digitally)

…Buy a real camera…

Their best bet is to honestly back up all of their important photos, passwords, videos, documents, and files over to an external hard drive. Then do a complete factory data reset. This will give a clean slate and ensure that the maximum amount of hard drive space is restored.

I do not recommend backing it up to icloud, because like all cloud services that is just someone else's computer. Better to own and store your own data locally than to entrust it to the untrustworthy.
