GM! β˜•οΈ How are you today? πŸ«‚πŸ’œ

It's December and I almost forgot about the last but very important planting of garlic. Despite the overnight frost, the soil is not frozen and I managed to dig in 2 types of spring and winter garlic with no problems. The winter one is my favourite, it is planted from November until the soil is not frozen. The harvest is generally in June πŸ§„πŸ§„πŸ§„

Winter garlic is more spicy and hardy. The heads in the photo are my garlic this year dug up in June and as you can see it is in excellent condition. It hasn't dried out, it hasn't rotted there is no mould on it. I can't imagine garlic from the shop surviving as well for six months πŸ˜‚

If you have the space, time and inclination I recommend planting it in the garden.

hey. I planted some the year before last. I just stuck some cloves from the market in the soil. some survived but I left them this summer. it freezes here all winter more or less. will I get scapes eventually if I just leave them there?

The question is, is it a winter variety? Garlic from the market is unlikely to be suitable for planting as you don't know the variety and it is often ie Chinese garlic (tasteless) . It is best to buy the heads directly from a garden shop or from someone who sells theirs, the winter variety.

You can plant winter garlic even in January, as long as the ground is not soggy.

You plant about 8-10 cm deep at 10 cm apart in rows every 20 cm, backfill and that's it.

I'm not sure if anything will grow after that time, but if the previous year's bulbs formed but you didn't dig them up, there's a chance you'll have garlic again.

awesome! I'll wait til spring or summer and order bulbs. I want the scapes for tossing in with veggies and things. thanks

No problem, I hope you will have some bulbs this year πŸ₯³πŸ«‚πŸ’œ

What fertilizer do you use? Garlic is a very very hungry plant.

I don't use fertiliser, I use crop rotation. Onions are not planted directly after fertiliser, but for example after cucurbit vegetables. This year I grew cucumbers in this bed, so it was topped with compost and granular manure, then I sowed a catch crop (winter rye and mustard)

Morning, garlic is kingβ˜•πŸ˜Š

Looks good! I’m eating ribeye for breakfast. Not a carnivore, but sounded tasty

Thank you! Fantastic breakfast 😍

Got a bunch of garlic in June from someone, and I let it dry for several weeks. Still eating some it now!

Yes, market garlic wouldn't last this many months πŸ˜€πŸ’œπŸ«‚
