I think people here underestimate just how many users Twitter/X has lost over the last year (not counting AI bots…). Looking back at people who were a major part of The Conversation a few years ago most of them simply don’t post anywhere anymore (or a few do on Bluesky). Turns out a bad algorithm is worse than none.

Nostr isn’t losing the user race, people just stopped posting.

Town square model is dying. Group chats thriving

Good riddance. I've always preferred chat over the flat Twitter model. People are generally more cordial with each other and you can have a real convo rather than just dunking on each other.

Are there any reasonable estimates somewhere on people leaving Twitter/X? Just anecdotally seeing posts generally get fewer "views" over the last year or so, but not sure how they quantify views in the first place.

Most of my Twitter/X feed became stuff I just didn't want to see, and the platform really got in my way in trying to find content I did want to see that I decided to just delete my account. But I'm just an insignificant drop in the Twitter/X ocean anyway.

Anecdotally I’ve heard this kind of thing a lot. I don’t think we have good public stats, though. I’m skeptical they have good stats either, tbh, given the prevalence of fairly convincing AI bots due to LLMs.

Hell yeah

Elol

Always has been 🌎🧑‍🚀🔫🧑‍🚀.

Even Facebook was fun before algo feeds. Anything other than chronological order is just a tool to keep you scrolling longer.

I don’t think that’s fair. If I follow a lot of people I might want the top posts from those I follow since I last logged in on top. There are tons of options that aren’t terrible and aren’t just tuned scroll-encouragement.

I guess it's what you want to get out of it. Personally I want to see what my friends said, when they said it. Not let an algo decide whether it's worthy of my attention.

Discovery isn't great on most nostr clients, so shitposting doesn't give them as much of attention here and on twitter

Shocker, it’s almost as if people here have realized the impact consuming informational entropy (shitposts) has on the mind.

At some point bitcoiners pick up on the inflation of information on other social medias; information is becoming debased and worthless for our limited compute (brains).

I too have abandoned shitposting circles. I just got tired of it. It's fun for a while. Now I value SNR; if I can't see everything from everyone I follow in 20 minutes every 24 hours in following too many people. If you fill up my feed with low effort musings or quips, not following. If you're all boosts and they're not interesting, not following. My follow count is low, because I don't follow for social clout, I follow because I want to see what you say. That is something that real people actually want, they don't want to feel like they're shouting into a void, they want followers to follow them because they want to hear what they say.

I don't post often. That's because I don't want to fill your feed with noise. If you actually have a manageable follow count, every now and then you'll see what I say and you can be rest assured it isn't garbage. It might not interest you, but it isn't noise. If you don't have a manageable follow count, following anyone is a waste of time, what you see is determined by what time you open your client app.

I was never on Twitter until Musk came over and came to Twitter.

Twitter continues to have all time high usage.

It's just the top users now are different than before.

It's not artificially lifting extreme left wing voices.

Now normal people and normal opinions have a voice.

I think you underestimate how good LLMs are.

If by "normal" you just mean racist and sexist garbage everywhere, then yes, it's "normal."

Also tfw you need to block Musk every few weeks because his account mysteriously unblocks itself.

Before it was ok to be racist against whites. Prejudice against Christians. Now the playing field is more even more fair. You can criticize any group the way you could criticize those.

Lol "criticize"

I find it telling that you're happy that rather than trying to reduce racism and so on entirely, they've reduced posting restrictions so you can be racist towards others.

Before if you said, "Hey, thats racist against white people!" People would be like, "White tears, white privledge. you can't be racist against white people, power plus privledge, they are demons".

I don't like racism. My kids are all mixed. But now when someone says something racist against white people you get 10 more people saying racist things in the other direction.

Feels way more fair to be honest.

I do find my self having more racist thoughts and honestly I don't like that but you know thats ok. White people shouldn't be the only people in the world who aren't allowed to be racist. And i'm kinda tired of rich white people telling poor white people how they should feel when rich white people only live around other white people. Move to fucking Atlanta for 3 months then come back and tell me how anti racist you are.

May be fair, but it’s the kind of garbage that drives lots of people off the platform. Hence my original post noting that a *lot* of people have stopped using Twitter, more than you realize because there’s more LLMs…

I've lived in South Central LA, which presumably is comparable to Atlanta for what you're saying. Still pretty anti-racist, although I really don't miss the apocalyptic number of cockroaches.

I try to curate a small group of people and stick with them.

I don’t like the idea of an LLM hijacking my mind, as it will ultimately serve the company’s interests, not my pursuit of truth.

Humans do the same,

but I believe LLMs have raised the bar.
