Oh boy, a lot of people will hate me for this, but here it goes! 🐶🐾🫡💜

I am convinced that from version 1.4.5 #[0] should introduce premium tier, and as the first paid feature, it should be Wallet Connect! Fight me!

If Damus would charge 1K sats a month for that tier and gradually add features, we will have sustainable dev model. If you get discount for a yearly subscription (maybe 10K a year), then even better!

Wallet Connect is nice but not necessary to enjoy and have full experience! 🐶🐾🫡

What if the devs charged for updates? 1K sats per update perhaps? I know #Amethyst might do fairly well with all of the updates nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z does. Perhaps it might even encourage them to do more frequent updates and adding more features.

I wouldn’t charge for updates, this is too old of a model and people want their apps renewed or they leave them. Wallet Connect will allow to have automatic charging since it will have keys to your wallet. That’s why I thought that this feature is a good entry into premium tier. If Amethyst will follow the suit, then it would be a fair game across clients. I am sure there are some power user features that people or businesses will be willing to pay for. 🐶🐾🫡

Not to disappoint, but 10k SATs a year requires 100000 wallet connect subscriptions per salaried developer. One developer cannot take good care of 100,000 paying users.

Good point, but that’s just a start. I am sure there could be other add-on features that could provide more income. And the there is zapdvertisement thing. 🐶🐾🫡 Thank you for your input!

Keep thinking. The issue is not on which features should be part of the premium solution, but how to make the numbers work. As soon as it becomes transactional, things get quite expensive.

🐶🐾🫡 will do!

10k per month is probably a reasonable number if the dev lives in US. That's like $2.5 per month. Assuming $5000 cost of living / month, only need 2000 paid users. But if the dev wants to have some savings and support their family well, probably need 4000 paid users.

Logarithmic decay of price in Sats is a good idea because the value of Sats against fiat should increase overtime.

Snort allows auto donations as a % of zaps. It’s not a total solution as pointed out, but I’d love to see this added to other clients to at least put more in the bucket.

I think eventually this makes sense, but building market share dominance makes more sense for as long as damus can afford it.

True! But Wallet Connect is just a convenience that is not required. We still can zap without it. 🐶🐾🫡

I agree. Psychology matters though and customers can be fickle. Humans are not logical.

I lack any expertise in that, so I will humbly back off if I am proved wrong! Product marketing and pricing are way too hard for me, blows right over my head! 🐶🐾🫡

I’m not an expert in this either! I suppose Damus could try it and see?

Maybe one month of free trial for new users too! 🐶🐾🤷‍♂️

There are a few privacy features I’d love to see added (if they’re not already) that I’d pay monthly for in a heartbeat. A big one:

- On device EXIF stripping on uploads so I don’t have to care where they’re uploaded

Maybe on payday I need to look at those bounty things. I just don’t usually have a bunch of spare sats, but offer me a sub and I’m a goner.

I guess it will all depend on pricing. If it’s low enough and has solid value, then many people pay. Free tier should have all the features for casual user that don’t care too much. We all pay for relays, some don’t, and we are not complaining. 🐶🐾🫡

I work for a living in code, and it’s a frustrating job. I want #[5] and #[6] and team to make a great living off this. I agree it’s not straight forward and agree a sub is a good way as it’s residual and recurring.

If Damus went paid tomorrow, I’d sub. But I know not everyone would. I’m glad you started this thread because I’m curious what stuff others consider “premium” in the client itself. Tbh, I think we’re spoiled 🤷‍♂️

We are absolutely spoiled, no doubt. Everyone got used to being a product and nobody minds it. 🐶🐾🫡💜

How does Sttike make money? Anyone know?

Strike

No idea, but GPT4 gave me this 🐶🐾🫡

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Strike is a payment processing platform that leverages Bitcoin's Lightning Network to facilitate fast and low-cost transfers of money. The exact details of how the business model is set up might vary over time and I cannot provide up-to-date information beyond September 2021.

However, here are a few potential ways Strike, or similar payment platforms, might make a profit:

1. **Transaction fees:** A common way for payment processors to make money is by charging a small fee on each transaction. Strike may choose to implement this in the future.

2. **Premium features:** Strike could offer premium services to its customers, such as higher transaction limits, priority customer support, or other features not available to free users.

3. **Interest on stored funds:** Like many financial companies, Strike could potentially make money by investing the funds users keep on their platform, much like how a bank uses the deposits of its customers to fund loans and other investments.

4. **Partnerships and integrations:** Strike could form partnerships with other companies and earn money from these relationships. For instance, if a business uses Strike to process payments, Strike could earn a percentage of the sales.

5. **Data monetization:** Some fintech companies monetize user data by providing it to third parties for marketing or research purposes. However, this would need to be done in compliance with privacy laws and regulations.

6. **Foreign exchange services:** If Strike supports cross-border payments, it might earn revenue from foreign exchange fees or margins.

Remember, the exact business model could vary and you should check the company's official resources for the most accurate and recent information.

Interesting. Microsat transaction fees that are barely noticeable to the end user, but add for Damus up with high volume? Similar to how lightning currently works could be viable?

With high enough volume, probably a good revenue stream. Shouldn’t be the only one🐶🐾🫡

Great suggestion. Added as privacy feature request https://github.com/damus-io/damus/issues/1127

I don’t hate you for this. Other reasons maybe…but not this. 🫂

🐶🐾🫂🤗💜

It's an open source app someone will just fork it and make everything free lol.

That’s fine, it still requires someone with knowledge and subscription to Apple developer program that costs 120 bucks a year. Not free! 🐶🐾🫡

Sounds good to me

Take my sats

🐶🐾🙌🏻

For ~1usd /month it's a bargain. My biggest issue with current pay models is barriers to entry. Zaps remove those barriers

Exactly! We can pay fractionally with LN and it works! 🐶🐾🫡

It does and that’s why I frickin love Nostr. Contributions can be requested and the plebs will distribute hoping that the person that asked isn’t doing them a rip-off

I could see something like an opt in toggle in the settings that lets end users voluntarily split a tiny fraction of each zap to go to damus catch on like wild fire 🔥.

Like the ones at the grocery store that ask to donate right at the point of sale. Since it’s 💯 voluntary, the app can say it’s free. Imagine heavy zappers flipping it on during #zapathon and encouraging plebs to do the same. We’re all feeling very generous at that time anyway, right?⚡️

True true

Fuck yeah! I’d feel good zapping and being zapped if the dev of my client gets a cut! Wallet Connect should be able to do it easily! 🐶🐾🙌🏻

Right? Win win!

Once Wallet Connect implements Split Payments this will literally make it easier for Premium Tier Users to zap ⚡️

📝

In Australia there is a law that capital gains do not apply if you have less than $10k AU, at time of crypto purchase, and it is mostly used for purchasing goods and services.

That's would be a good thing to know before flip flopping and selling and buying at the top.

A convenient way within nostr to buy sats that is clearly seperate from the exchange used for the main stack would be helpful.

That could be a good feature if Damus partners with someone or through some other integration, that will provide some cut of the profit! 🐶🐾🫡

Good idea not just in terms of supporting the devs. This would also keep some low value content out. On the other side everybody should have access to connect their wallets. However it’s a low amount and nearly everybody can afford this.

Good stuff always has a price.🙏🏽🧡
