Limited TV time, only shows we have previewed, slight emphasis toward slower paced shows, avoid using TV (or any screens) as a babysitter.
Limited number of screens in the house overall. We dont have our phones at the table with us, especially when eating dinner (in fact they are often not in the room at all while we eat) and generally keep laptops out of our bedroom. No TVs in bedrooms.
This is pretty much exactly what we do too, we also use the google family link app for the mobile to limit apps and screen time. (I hate google but it's the only free one 🤷🏻♂️) also, no social media except basic messaging.
We have a rule they must do homework and chores after school. If it’s nice out, be outside for at least 30-60min then be off screens by 6pm. Kids are age 4-11yo
I’ve seen them fall asleep with YouTube playing in their face before and the next day is hell bc they got either terrible or very little sleep.
I like to have them explore their own interests as I did when I was introduced to computers but also set boundaries and consequences for crossing them.
We had to remove it entirely for a while when he was 5-7 because it didn’t lead to anything but meltdowns even though he didn’t even get that much screen time in general. We switched to physical workbooks during dinners our or on flights and it was awesome. These days he loves watching movies together and playing occasional video games but always with one of us. It’s not easy and everyone has different experiences I’m sure! 💜
My parenting approach leans towards free-range, responding to my kids' current needs and moods. If they're hungry, tired, or thirsty, I adjust accordingly. If they're overly fussy, I cut back on screen time; if they're proactive, I'm more lenient. Screens are part of modern life, after all. Additionally, they read books before bed every night until they doze off. My upbringing involved homeschooling and plenty of video games, so I understand the balance.
