If you have shitty devices that want to connect to WiFi (ie smart TVs, Phillips hue light bulbs etc)...

These should be on a separate network as your workstation and phone, like the guest network.

Usually these devices are never updated and have the shittiest security ever, don't let them see your trusted devices on the network.

i have a tv from 2005 and only use incandescent lights so 😭 i think i’m safe

my tv is a hand me down from my dad i’ve had forever, it still works like a charm and never broke. i’ll never buy another tv!

internet of shit vlan

I see IoT networks being a common occurrence on home networks as we progress. But then again I live in the woods & like low tech appliances.

Why does my stove & fridge need WiFi?

So government can check that you don't store or cook any bad climate foods

That & cast iron doubles as a weapon. Stove sends a signal that pan has exceeded acceptable weight.

Owner must be placed on extremist watch.

For monitoring the temperature of food in the freezer or fridge. This could help prevent food going bad due to various issues. It doesn't need WiFi, but an ability to send sensor data, and it doesn't need to be two-way.

Fair point but your food should be rotating as it’s used & it’s pretty obvious when your fridge stops working.

I speak as someone who just had to replace their fridge a year ago.

Awe, stop it. Now how am I gunna have any fun with my flipper?!

Shit! But if things like Phillips lights are on a separate network, wouldn’t that mean they wouldn’t work with your home setup and phone anymore?

I dunno I'm a boomer that uses light switches, but if they connect to some kind of cloud it will still work

I need to look into this too. Thanks

Some TVs have "hidden" menus that can be activated by specific key combinations, on the remote, that will provide the ability to disable WiFi and Bluetooth.

Better yet, put them on a separate, older wifi router with peer-to-peer disabled.

Great advice. I have an IoT SSID on my wireless network for this reason. My IoT and other untrusted devices go here. They have Internet access but no access to any other devices on my network.

Next innovation: open fridge with facial recognition

why people buy this shit is beyond me
