It's so annoying that so many places require phone numbers to "verify" yourself. I am now locked out of my own Stripe account because I don't have a phone number to verify myself. It's annoying to have to jump through hoops just to prove you're you.

Aye... Mobile number seems to be the favourite "proof of person" at the moment. Highly annoying.

What's more bizarre is that a phone number doesn't necessarily even verify any particular identity. It's an awful 2FA (SIM swap) and companies should let users choose a different option or at least force it at signup to avoid rugs later.
Why are they even using phone numbers for verification anyway? It requires trusting the telecoms providers which is simply not secure or private
Roll on key pairs replacing all passwords/email/phone numbers.
