A confession.

I love modding game consoles for homebrew & piracy, way back to the Dreamcast days. I like being able to do what I want with my hardware. I get as much enjoyment learning how to own the consoles as I do from playing video games I think.

I didn't have to work a real job for 3 years during the original Xbox run, just modded consoles for a living, installing 250GB drives loaded with games, TV and movies. My roommate at the time was a weed dealer and we had 4 networked Xbox in the house for epic halo lan parties, and people over constantly. That was good times. I even had a filesharing server on an Xbox running Gentoo Linux. Ever built Gentoo from source on a P3-733 with 64mb ram? Not recommended.

The original PSP had a pretty good scene as well, I did loads of those for friends. All my Nintendo handhelds have seen flashcards, and I helped my friends with that too. 3ds is a great retro handheld, get them while they are cheap! Software mods are crazy easy.

My current favorite is the Switch, love the form factor! Currently installing the new Zelda game 12 days early. I'll be back with spoilers soon!

The hours of Pokémon I played on my PSP can’t be counted.

I still have a PSP. Patapon is still best on the original hardware!

Wouldve loved a halo party! Even still lol 🙌 thanks for sharing

16 player blood gulch capture the flag pistols and sticky grenades only fuck yeah.

🤝🏽 I used a Xecuter mod chip in the original Xbox and tricked out the jewel with LEDs... My friends were astounded when I could play games without discs

I had one as well, I still have that Xbox in a closet! I used software exploits for my mods, and I used my chipped box as my test system!

Hey Ryan! Are all Switch models and software versions hackable? And how hard is it?

Any software version, but only the first revision of the hardware are easily exploited, later versions are patched and require a mod chip. The og version has a handy buffer overflow in the recovery mode that lets you boot unsigned code.

Yes perfect, I have the very first version. I'll have to look into it. It's been a while since I hacked a console!! 🤝👍

Nice! If you have any questions feel free to DM me. gbatemp.net is your friend.

Yesterday I was wondering if I should get an OLED version.

Tonight I'm one click away from buying an RCM loader! 😅

I still have a question though. You were telling me about your dual boot. Does that mean there is a way to have the homebrew untethered? Because I haven't seen anything about that yet... 🤔

And if that's the case, I guess I don't need any RCM loader...

You still need the loader, not a cold boot solution yet. That being said you can just run a payload server on your PC or phone too, rather than buying any hardware.

It does make things easier though 😂

Clearly! I'm definitely gonna order one, on the move it will be the perfect fit! 😁

Thanks for the tips and links, I'm fired up right now! 🔥🔥😁

🫨 Thank you! Obviously if you have any questions going forward let me know! 🙏🫂💜

Will do! Thanks! 🤝🤙

Maybe sure to make an emunand (a copy of the system nand duplicated to the SD card, and used for running the modded os), then you can dual boot between modded and retail, the best of both worlds!

🤯🤯🤯

So I can still use online features on the retail side???

Yes!

Ok I really need to dive into it!!

Have you ever had issues of any kind?

Running games that needed a more recent firmware for example? Or anything else?

The dev team behind the cfw, Atmosphere, are really fast. Usually a day or two after updates drop, no worries there. I've been running my current emunand for about 5 years without issues, it is pretty stable!

What do you think about Steam Deck? Tested one recently and oh boy, you can configure this thing to death. Almost now need to jailbreak it 😬 Kind of reminded me of Dreamcast…

I‘m a hardcore PC maxi for historical reasons (consoles were luxury where I grew up), but you’re totally right that being able to mod your hardware is the universal human right 🫡

I want one so bad. There are some other cool options out there too, I'm not sure what to get. I'll probably pull the trigger once the switch is a retro console. Can't be much longer.

I've been getting back into gaming and modded consoles myself lately. Right now I'm running:

- MisterFPGA to CRT for retro

- OG Xbox w/ Xecutor, LCD, and 1 TB

- PS3 SuperSlim w/ CFW and 1 TB

Between those 3 I'm covered up until 20 years ago or so. I don't have much interest in last few gens outside of Switch and PS4.

Slim* not SuperSlim

I need to resurrect my OG Xbox with a big drive, would be nice to have it back under the TV.
