He is a based Christian that is wicked smart in Math. His parents are pushing him to tradfi route via college.

My goal is to get him a hardware device once he has a large enough UTXO to move. Will Zeus move it off of lightning as a large UTXO when the time is right?
I would assume so but can’t say for sure, I use it more as a spending wallet. still using custodial wallets to sweep to cold storage unfortunately

Bull Wallet has auto swaps to onchain, and can work with airgapped hardware wallets.

same — using River right now but downloaded Bull wallet. In the past I’ve swapped to Monero and back with Cake wallet but that’s not super efficient
Bull wallet is in beta, not a true lightning wallet, but an excellent option. Lightning payments take a little longer because of the swaps.
Wallet of Satoshi now has a self-custody option.
Zeus is a bit intense but does a lot, if you don't mind the name.
Minibits is the one I've had success with for Nostr zaps, but its a cashu wallet.
I really like Bull wallet even though it's in Beta and it's not a true lightning wallet, but it's pretty good.
It's much better than Aqua because you have access to your xpubs.
That means he can add it to BTCpayServer.
You can also add an air gapped signing device like a Cold Card or Seed Signer and easily level up your Bitcoin cyber security.
