You can't zap notes anymore, Will was pressured by Apple to remove this function juts last week. Apple understands zapping notes as buying digital content. You zap a note, you buy the note, that is against their rules.

There are iOS clients that can still zap notes but they technically against guidelines and will eventually be forced to remove it.
Yeah, apple is scatter shot when it comes to appstore enforcement.
I suspect if there isn’t a zap icon, but instead a setting in the app which causes a zap to happen when the user posts a reaction, then that would be allowed in another app but not Damus. Mostly because now there’s a big note in the Damus file telling them to look extra carefully at anything related to zaps.
The thing is, flying under the radar works when you’re small but won’t once apps get to scale, and the whole point of this project is to reach a larger audience.
It is similar to how GPL apps are technically in violation of the AppStore rules. If somebody complains to apple, then the GPL app will be removed from the AppStore. In the case of GPL, it’s not like apple really cares, but their license rules are incompatible with the GPL license so if informed, they’ll remove the app.
I think the real solution is to join the campaign demanding alternative payment channels and app stores on iOS. It is not ok that such an important platform for communication is locked down the way apple does it.
It just doesn’t make any sense. The note is there already before Someone can zap it! Therefore it’s free for everyone to see at first hand. So their s argumentation is nonsense

It is not enforced unless somebody insists, but the AppStore has never been compatible with the GPL. We choose MPL 2.0 in part because of these restrictions. Basically the same thing, but it does also include some branding / trademark protections, which a while back Damus had issues with as well.

Exactly. I highly doubt the other iOS apps that implement zaps will get removed or be asked to remove zaps.

They will be fine. They could probably add even more zap buttons and not have any problems.
Other new iOS apps that implement zaps will also gain access to the App Store. Life isn’t fair. It sucks. But Apple is not some divine arbiter of judgment, they make all kinds of sloppy and inconsistent review decisions.
In my case the cost is less than 50$ per month. But I also have media hosting, which is a different kind of traffic. The nostrcheck relay is private and doesn't have as many users.
What I do see as exaggerated is the $600, but of course it depends a lot on the provider and the contract you have.
