Am I alone in thinking that the Web of Trust idea isn't actually that useful? There's four accounts here that know me IRL, and others have been interacting with me for nearly three years. Can we not calculate a true web of trust in our own heads?

I dont think its meant to redefine what you already know. Its just to inform you of what (who) you dont know. Its a tool after all. Not all tools are universally useful, always.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…

Web of trust didn’t work for the internet…

So I’m not sure why everyone thinks it’s going to work here on the internet now?

🤷🏻‍♂️

Just my 2 sats on the matter

What do you mean "didn't work"? Are you talking about the specific implementation around PGP?

Hes probably talking about the WoT extension from way back when

Also not a big fan of WoT idea but the goal is if your seeing a lot of spam from bots in comments and stuff you currently have no way to block that, with WoT you can set to hide comments from WoT below X level. Ofc some valid new npubs can get hit.

Couldn’t zap you.

Hmm, 5th time I've been told in recent days. May just switch to another wallet while I try and figure out why some work and some fail.

I’ll align it with orphan black as a shadow to web of trust. Playing the archetype “‘choose your own adventures “ game seems to work for me. :)

No. We can't, evidently. 🙄

I'm so over this rating of everything thing. We are not products to review. We are people who can or can't be trusted. Trust is the ultimate PoW. It cannot be replaced algorithmically.

Right on 👌🏼

I just have a spat claiming to have all the wisdom - some crap developer. He got it coming.

Exactly - and it changes from person to person and thing to thing. I remember when a mate of mine said, of another of her friends, 'I'd trust him with my life, but I wouldn't trust him with a tenner laying around'

I have been using it for a few months. I find it very useful to see which replies are scammers or bots and which ones deserve my attention. Same for DMs and notifications in the app. I find myself trusting users more if I know my algo has given them a bigger score than others.

You dont feel like youre missing meeting potentially new people? Is there a way to quantify how many people you just won't know exist?

Your algo can rank new people higher if you want. It all depends on your choice of algorithm.

Okay, maybe I'm misunderstanding WoT. I thought it was distinct from user algos? So if an account with no followers at all, that hasn't had the opportunity to form a network of friends, replies to your post and youre using a client that implements WoT, will that show up in the thread for you?

Web of Trust is just a calculation based on your network. You can use somebody else's Web Of Trust calculations that don't allow you to customize anything OR what we are releasing that allows users to pick their individual algos for the calculations.

So, if the user will show up or not, it entirely depends if you want it to show or not and then pick the right provider that matches that need.

OK...

Most people just use whatever is default. They don't have the time or expertise to dive into the guts and hand tailor their algo. Default parameters define networks. What's the default and does it lead to what ive described for most people?

It appears the default is to not have a WoT set up, so that suits me. Ideas like 'it helps me detect spam and fake profiles' seems a bit weak, fron where I'm sitting, because I can usually spot a spammer or a scammer or a bot and simply block them. I don't know that a numerical score will make that any easier than it already is. But I think you're right, there's a chance it blocks out new accounts and even worse, may help create circle jerk silos, or 'economy chambers', as they're more commonly known.

I use WoT on Coracle and it works great as a base-level filter for Spam etc. It's also a pretty solid way to distinguish impersonator profiles, at least for reasonably high-profile individuals.

No, you're not.

don't trust, verify.

Ive noticed that it kind of ossified the people you see and its basically impossible for a new person to be seen by anyone using WoT.

I'm sorry Matt, we had a good run.

Exactly

I am still unclear what it is for. Trust is not something you can calculate. Someone can easily rick all the metrics and you cannot still trust them. Trust takes time and discernment. I am also yet to understand on "what metrics" and who agrees to it? If anyone creates whatever then does that negate the purpose of it? I know little bout it and I'd be keen to know more. However, the hype that I am seeing on my feed is that: it is the next thing to avoid scam/spam. But isn't the buttons to block/mute/report people enough? At least it works for me. We cannot avoid bots anyway unless you introduce captcha. I am only thinking out loud. ☺️🫂 But hey, what do I know lol 🤣

excuse the typo. I meant anyone could tick all the metrics but still you cannot trust them. They could be wolf dress like a sheep. 😂☺️

eh but we've been talking about it for almost two years, web of not spam
