Nostr will succeed only when we figure out how to create safer spaces for marginalized folk to traverse without getting attacked. The whole freedom of speech thing doesn't mean you can come vomit all over someone's notes with impunity. Words carry power and weight.

Without bona fide blocking, an attacker can spam someone’s replies for others to see, and can continuously keep tabs on their victim’s thoughts and information they post (location etc).

I haven’t come across an effective proposal to stop this— same problem somewhat exists in the fediverse as well, and even any ā€œcompleteā€ block can be circumvented by an attacker spinning up a new identity (though a weak barrier is better than nothing).

If there is no solution, I think what people need to consider is that they not regard nostr like a twit*er or facebo*k. This is a place where you have to protect yourself fully— stay anon, don’t leak info etc, all habits everyone should begin to practice in the current surveillance hellscape, so in this way it’s good (but I agree freaking pathetic from a societal pov).

The strongest use case for nostr is for posting truly censorship resistant content, not social media, IMO, even if I primarily use it as social media.

Yep! I like to comparison of nostr to a big public internet bulletin board vs activitypub as email for social media. How do you see the spam issue manifest in the fediverse?

I am really interested in seeing how the relay software evolves to filter out hate speech. Its good the european union is getting folks in the habit of paying for social media.

I don’t know how spam is resolved currently— I see very little here in terms of follows and replies to my notes, not sure if that’s just because of how small nostr is rn. I think some relays are paid to filter in some cases

My safety is UP TO ME. I am either fragile or resilient. I can engage or ignore. I can take something personally or pass it by.. or even realize the pain that is trying to produce more pain. But *I choose* my mindset... and my wellbeing.
