American Psycho's amazin in a sense that you see how corporate/working world can crush a human soul. There're many different interpretations of the movie and I can link an hour of good analysis videos, but that's the aspect of it that resonated w/ me the most.
Devil's Advocate has the best adaptation of Satan I've ever seen. It's mostly subtlety and manipulation, indirect, that's what Satan is (I imagine).
Jacob's Ladder is a psychological mystery more than horror. I wasn't sure what exactly was going on until the end, which's a rare experience a movie can provide these days.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things is a dream/journey like movie that takes you to some different mindspace. They way they shot it, dialogues, internal monologues of characters, choice of music, color correction, it's like a fleeting dreamlike yet making you feel like you're there kind of a movie, It's just different. It's an evoking emotion kind of a movie.
Based on this I would say you might not appreciate Men in Black. You seem much more thoughtful and engaged than the average viewer.
I don't think I'd like Men in Black much either. I skipped it in the past based on trailer and reviews. Also I guess I've see a lot more movies than an average viewer. The more you see varieties of anything, the more selective you become in average. You didn't list anything from your own favorite movie list?
I don’t know why but when someone asks about favorite movies or music my mind goes completely blank. Then like, yes I like those. You would think I’ve barely watched a film or listened to music in my life. I can think of my comfort movies that I rewatch repeatedly. I think that’s different than my favorite movies. Some of the best movies I don’t necessarily want to watch 50 odd times like I’ve probably seen Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice, Auntie Mame, or Sliding Doors. Ok Auntie Mame is hands down a particular favorite.
Citizen Kane, took me forever to see but upon viewing I understood why so many people rave about it.
The Man in the Moon. Reese Witherspoon’s first role. It’s nostalgic for me.
Somewhere in Time. I’m a sucker for time travel movies Somewhere in Time is probably the originator of that. About Time is also really cute.
I have a soft spot for kick-ass action movies with female leads, Atomic Blonde, The Old Guard, Wanted, Salt.
SLC Punk is a favorite.
I could go on and on about movies I enjoy. I could probably even give you favorites from film festivals I’ve attended.
Ohh a lot of romance. I watched Sliding Doors last month. I haven't seen a lot of those older movies. I guess it's time for me to add Citizen Kane to the list, I can only avoid watching it for so long.
I'm a sucker for female lead power fantasy movies too. How can one get tired of seeing Charlize Theron doing fancy things? lol. I'm waiting for The Old Guard 2 for sure.
Speaking of antiheroine movies, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) has a special place for me among them.
You seem to have a more in depth movie taste than I do. Although I like some festivalish movies like Primer 2004 and some others I can't remember, I'm not that movie festival level deep at this point.
The peak romance movie I know is Before trilogy, but it's so famous I bet you've heard of if already.

I like the original Girl trilogy with Noomi Rapace. I haven’t watched the English version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, even though I really like Rooney Mara as an actress. I tend to boycott recent remakes with no significant changes. I really like the original British movie Death at a Funeral. It’s hilarious. The American remake changes enough to make it also worth a watch. The humor is just different between the two.
I’ve seen Before Sunrise but not the whole trilogy.
Ethan Hawke makes me think of some other movies that are also good. Dead Poets Society, Reality Bites. He not in these next few but 90’s grunge era made me think of Singles, Empire Records, and Clerks.
I think I saw some or all of the first movie of original trilogy after watching English version and though Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig fit the roles better and I liked the overall atmosphere of English version better personally. Like IDK if you've watched recent Sandman TV series but there're not many people who'd fit Morpheus role as well as Tom Sturridge does, which's something Neil Gaiman confirmed after they auditioned 100s of people for Morpheus but decided their first choice of Tom Sturridge kind of a thing. I like Rooney Mara too.
I think core mechanic of alternate timelines could've been better executed in Sliding Doors w/ a better scenario. Although it was nice to watch pre pseudo wellness guru Gwyneth Paltrow, I didn't find much enjoyment of watching her alternating misery between the self explanatory first guy and second guy who didn't disappoint when he said he was already married or something. It was as apparent as sunrise in the morning how sleazy/sneaky/snakey the second guy was by their very first interaction.
I haven’t watched the Sandman series.
The problem with romantic movies is they don’t show the healthiest relationships. They tend to show the problematic ones. A good relationship and life might not be that exciting to watch but lovely to live.
I agree on the part that something perfectly functional doesn't have storytelling value, though you don't necessarily need to pick the most unlikable characters in both timelines which also makes your movie less watchable.
Why did you think it felt horribly dated?
I heard Paltrow didn’t like the actors cast to be her love interests in the film, finding them too unattractive. I actually like John Hannah. He’s normally cast as the best friend with witty quips. So I think I liked him being cast as the leading man. The film is however showing its age and how it’s so very 90’s, in style and tone.

You really disliked Sliding Doors eh? I think I first watched it when I had mono in middle school so I’ve never been thinking about it very critically.
I don't have a problem w/ John Hannah, I just didn't like his "Ima sneak into your heart in your vulnerable moment, and later reveal I'm still married" insincere character. I didn't think about it critically until you asked either. When being asked, I had to dig deep and find reasons why I might not have been a big fan.
Fair enough. He still meets her again in a vulnerable moment at the end of the movie in the original timeline. I think of the story of James told in the movie as the alternate timeline. It’s basically takes the idea of if I just met them sooner it would’ve been better and shows that’s probably not the case.
Which desktop Nostr client r u using btw, if any? Iris is okay but the way it displays conversations threads is bad. If someone replies to same thread node twice, you have to battle it to get to that. Snort is better but It doesn't necessarily notify you when someone mentions you, consistently.
I typically use Damus. I’ve tried Iris a bit, Primal as well. But I haven’t been the best at exploring other clients. My computer is my distraction free zone. I try to keep them just to my iPad but they’ve crept back on to my phone recently.
