I feel this way too. I'm more of a meet at a bar or restaurant addhoc guy.

On the flip side

Running an active meetup takes time energy and SATs. It can turn fiat real quick.

If they want to have workshops or other events someone has to foot that bill. Who should?

💯

Well, we’ve got plenty of tools now that are open source and built on Nostr… nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424 built Plektos. There’s also nostr:npub138lktp328xjqvs45zysswzjxu4gxj58uypmlt486nxhek3dry8vsf3zeru and nostr:npub1dtgg8yk3h23ldlm6jsy79tz723p4sun9mz62tqwxqe7c363szkzqm8up6m with Satlantis. Not sure where nostr:npub1yaul8k059377u9lsu67de7y637w4jtgeuwcmh5n7788l6xnlnrgs3tvjmf is at with Comingle? nostr:npub1patrlck0muvqevgytp4etpen0xsvrlw0hscp4qxgy40n852lqwwsz79h9a built NostrCal.

Then it’s not a Nostr app, but Evento by nostr:npub1akngghxzy6d75y8szp6y44u5pxktwy5aj6zh6jl3ncp8d93fj2fq5mfxa8 takes Bitcoin payments.

So footing the bill isn’t the issue, IMHO, but supporting our community is. I’d rather we use things in the Bitcoin + Nostr ecosystem.

I’ve had to scale back on my work with Comingle due to time constraints unfortunately. I’m cheering on all the other Nostr event apps out there!

Awww 🥰 you’re kinda in demand 😉 happy thanksgiving to you and the Mrs.!

I am not disagreeing on the speed of options on NOSTR. Really cool stuff. I am just saying that most people who could care less who hosts their data are not going to spend the time learning.

I want to say I heard primal has an out of the app store option that will help the user get going with follows and relay stuff. I do not keep up TBH.

Plus, it is mostly Bitcoiner content.

something to keep in mind, a strategic posture that gets around the "nobody cares where it's stored" thing. don't market your product as nostr-powered, except quietly in fine print and technical documents. they don't care. focus that energy on what they do care about.

FWIW - Native Bitcoin Ticketing is built into nostr:nprofile1qqs2rx4daefmcuwjttl0xegx0guh3tps64fq6dhv3nr56aagw2hhxkgprpmhxue69uhhwmm59eeh2er0vdshymr0wvhxxmmdqy8hwumn8ghj77npwqh8wct5vd5qvs052a

(Not just linking your wallet to your profile - but a full on ticket management system, all bitcoin native)

Lots has changed now that we have a sole focus on events.

Like Orange Pill app, nostr:npub1akngghxzy6d75y8szp6y44u5pxktwy5aj6zh6jl3ncp8d93fj2fq5mfxa8 should nostrize Evento meetups. Orange pill app is paid, but once they blasted all their bitcoiner meetups to nostr as NIP-52 they multiplied their network power immensely instead of keeping it closed.

The effort is now-a-days almost zero with all the AI vibe coding, so no reason not to do it.

No actually they didn’t amplify anything. They made it 10x harder to manage because none of those events are actually published by the host. They are published by OPA’s key, so they are completely separate & distinct events, which the owners of said event don’t know about, and the potential attendees who may register are just flowing in limbo on a registration list nobody is going to check

And even if the events are “claimed” by the host, (a) the Nostr calendar event itself is not assigned to the event host, and (b) even if that was one day solved, it creates another problem which is the host then needs to manage two separate registration lists.

We did this 9mths ago, and deprecated it because of these very reasons.

If we’re gonna do it, we do it right.

I have to hardily disagree here. nostr:nprofile1qyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2aqqypnyupc0uf08dhwwlf2f98qdushv45ypqzf4ql3ymerzyp63ekm65u5nzvk adding their events is a huge win regardless if the host publishes or not. It seeded a huge amount of data to nostr that just wasn't being published before. They could drastically improve by letting their users give them their npub within the settings of nostr:nprofile1qyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2aqqypnyupc0uf08dhwwlf2f98qdushv45ypqzf4ql3ymerzyp63ekm65u5nzvk and if a user has a listed npub use that npub as a p tag to show them as the host but that doesn't diminish that it was a huge win regardless.

It doesn't really matter who creates the event. Most nostr livestreams aren't pubished by the actual streamer. They are determined by the p tag of the listed event host. As for managing two lists it would be easily for OPA to just import the same public nostr data into their own DB to let their users manage their event directly in their own ecosystem over OPA+nostr.

This. Just make it work. Then Make it good later.

Just collect a small amount of sats from the attendees, either per event, or as a community fee

nostr:nprofile1qqs2rx4daefmcuwjttl0xegx0guh3tps64fq6dhv3nr56aagw2hhxkgprpmhxue69uhhwmm59eeh2er0vdshymr0wvhxxmmdqy8hwumn8ghj77npwqh8wct5vd5qvs052a supports the former right now, and soon will support memberships and communities so organizers can properly fund their operation

That's when you turn the meetup into a club with members and membership fees. members pay for annual access, non-members have to pay a small to attend a talk or workshop.

The model has been replicated multiple times around the world. If you want a blueprint, I'm more than happy to share it, could write up a post if interested, its fairly simple

Feel free to contribute your thoughts here 🙂

I've been trying to collect good practices, lessons learned, content and other resources from Bitcoin meetup organizers and put them all in one place.

Cheers!
