Welcome new folks! I’ve been getting these questions a lot in the past couple of days so here we go:

1. What are zaps?

Zaps are receipts of bitcoin lightning payments to posts or profiles on nostr (the name of the underlying protocol). By attaching a lightning address to your profile via a wallet like wallet of satoshi, you can send and receive any amount of money to anyone in the world in under a second. This is all possible without any intermediaries. Its uncensorable money over an uncensorable speech protocol.

2. What are relays and why do we need them?

Relays are regular servers and regular databases. When posting notes or following users, it sends your notes/contact list/profile/etc to multiple relays at once controlled by different people. We do it this way because we believe no one should have the ability to unilaterally deplatform you.

3. How do you make money

Still trying to figure that out.

Zaps are optional, if you don’t care for them you don’t need to attach a lightning address to your profile. Some clients don’t display it at all.

Nostr has nothing to do with bitcoin or lightning, some clients choose to integrate with it because it aligns with the philosophy of an uncensorable, decentralized speech protocol.

For the last question. What about a transaction fee for zaps? Or a type of usage fee?

Yes that is the other idea but requires integrated wallet support (nip47) which isn’t ready yet. Soon!

Stupid idea:

Create an account that posts the FAQ for beginners.

Clients when onboarding a new user can show the latest post of this account.

This way we stay flexible if we want to add new information for the newbies without altering client side anything.

Yes. It could be.

Make sure your Zap lightning wallet is connected. Test it.

Then get followers. See if you can find other artists etc.

Then eventually, launch a date to post your art... and people might give you some Sats in return. This is value for value style economy here.

I see.. I will look into the zap thing- I never used a lightning wallet before or any bitcoin (zap is related to bitcoin?) stuff. It seems like there's a big learning curve to these terminologies/lingo for people that never delved in this type of thing before. Even though it might be simple, there is some ambiguity to it from my perspective and uncertainties as to what choices I should make. Like for instance- there are various lightning wallets, but I have no idea what is the difference between them. I guess I need to research more about it. Anyways, thanks!

Yes, you're right. There is a learning curve to this.

Start slow and ask questions when needed.

'Zaps' is a term we call Bitcoin transactions that occur in a specific method over something called the Lightning Network. These are smaller pieces of Bitcoins we call Satoshis - or Sats for short - named after the creator of Bitcoin. Most Clients/Apps that use Nostr have the capability to send Sats to each other and we call them Zaps because it's an analogy to being struck by Lightning haha!

To begin using this asap, download a Lightning Wallet - we all use one called "Wallet of Satoshi". It's quite user friendly. Then link it to your Nostr account.
