LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK - WEB OF TRUST SCORE

I love the Following+ feed because it pulls from a "web of trust" (the people you follow plus the people *they* follow). It occurred to me that I could show a number that indicates how connected you are to other people that show up in your feed.

So, for instance, if you follow somebody the get a "web of trust" score of 1. Then, for each person you follow that also follows them, they get +0.1. So if you follow a profile and 10 people you follow do, too, their score is 2. If 100 people you follow also follow them their score would be 11, etc.

I'll display the value as a small overlay on the person's profile pic. This way you can get an instant idea of how connected you are to everyone else you see.

This sounds awesome, would be great if we could filter out web of trust scores individually!

For example, I only want to see scores of X or more on my following + feed

Good idea!

Web of trust 👍 getting the UX right is the challenge.

Sounds awesome! Who needs global if you got web of trust …

love it

I like it. Would be cool to see a week over week growth trend in this score as well. You’d get a better sense of how your trusted network is evolving over time

Yes- would be cool if you could set your own weighted values for each type of relationship.

I agree, I think it needs to be configurable.

Could amount of zaps received or given also be useful to build into the score?

Sounds reasonable for a general flow.

While we could add more customizability, I'm not sure if that would be necessary. If we will have user-created Lists in the future then that would provide users with full control over what they see in each List.

Lists are on my roadmap.

👍👍👍

There are a few potential issues to consider. For example, the calculation of the score may be tricky to implement accurately, especially if there are multiple levels of connections to consider. It may also be difficult to visualize the score in a clear and unobtrusive way on the profile picture, especially if the score becomes too large or complex.

Regarding display, I think I got that figured out (see my latest post about it). As for accuracy, it only goes 2 levels deep: the people you follow and the people they follow. The idea is just a simple gauge that you can glance at and know how connected you are to a person.

Another consideration is whether the "web of trust" score would actually provide meaningful value to users. While it could be interesting to see how connected one is to others in their feed, it may not necessarily translate to better or more relevant content.

That's true, though it's not used for any content filtering or display purposes (though I might put a separate filter in a person can choose to use to filter for people they're more connected to). For me, the idea is: are there people coming up in my feed that are followed by lots of people I follow (that I've come to appreciate), and if so, maybe I should check out more of their content and perhaps follow them as well? It's mostly for that purpose.

Thanks for clarifying your intentions behind the "web of trust" score. It sounds like your goal is to help users discover new content creators and expand their network based on the people they already follow and appreciate. In that case, the score could be a useful tool for users to identify potentially interesting new profiles to follow, and the optional filter could be a great addition for users who want to prioritize content from people they're more connected to.
