People aren’t longing to be impressed; they’re longing to feel like they’re home. If you create a space full of love and character and creativity and soul, they’ll take off their shoes and curl up with gratitude and rest, no matter how small, no matter how undone, no matter how odd.

Agreed. People spend way too much time copying what someone else is doing with their home, which generally is a copy of someone else's and so on and so forth. They never even take a minute to ask if they like whatever it is themselves. They just do it, so when other briefly visit they feel that they will be 'impressed' or at the very least not 'think badly' of them. Its so ridiculous. Your home should be how you want it and like you say people will comfortable if you are comfortable. Obviously you have to make an effort on the basics like it not being a complete mess. Other than that, do it how you want not how you are told.
I’m trying to feel at home, and I’m confident by the end of the year I will find that. Thanks for this!
