When people warn against "address reuse" is that about not sending *to* the same address twice, sending *from* the same address twice, or both? (Though I think most of our wallets today only send from an address once, creating a new *change* address.)

Is it bad opsec to send *to* the same address twice? Maybe a dumb question...

Sending to the same address you control twice.

Yes it is bad opsec to send to the same address.

If you think about it, if you send bitcoin *to* the same address twice, then you'll end up spending *from* the same address twice eventually.

But you don't need to spend twice from the same address for it to be bad opsec. The moment you add funds to an address twice, you link those funds. Now we know both sets of funds are owned or have been owned by the same person. That may not be enough to cause you trouble, but the game is to avoid giving anything away if you can.

So sending to the same address/utxo twice is not a good way to "consolidate" before consolidating...hm...ok ty!

Consolidation requires this sacrifice.

It very well may be worth it, but it forever links those utxo's.

Its about using your private key to sign a transaction from the same address. Sending to the same address multiple times from various sources, such as an exchange is not insecure. However, you want to spread your incoming uxtos out among as many addresses in your wallet as possible so you can reduce doxing yourself by tieing multiple accounts to one ID. Putting an address out there for donations is perfectly acceptable from a key security point of view no matter how many people send to it. The problem with a static recieving address is you are potentially doxxing your contributors. From a business point of view, you dont want your comoetitors being able to measure your revenue or identify your customers, so you don't want to ask your different customers to use the same address. Seed phrases and xpubs fix this, issue a new recieve address every time you give it out, they are free. Just don't divulge your xpub, or you might as well as use just one btc recieve address for everyone.
