Has anyone ever used grass clippings as mulch? I saw it suggested on a website but I have never tried it. Just put some around my tomato plant since it’s wanting to dry out to much

Sure it’ll break down pretty quick though. It will return a bit of nitrogen to the soil.

I usually use newspaper. Maybe I’ll try a layer of it over the clippings

I would do the reverse, the grass will hold the paper down. I have use grass clippings for my paths keeps weeds down.

Considering mulch of any sort is meant to protect what's beneath it, why would it matter if it's drying out?

Looks like I read the post too quickly.

The tomato plant is drying out too quickly.

Grass works ok as long as it mats down and doesn't blow away.

Better to compost the grass and mulch with the compost.

I’ve heard of that but haven’t tried. I asusme it provides moisture? How are your tomato plants doing after you use the grass clippings as mulch?

I don’t know yet. Just added it today so I will see how they look tomorrow. My main concern is adding weeds but it is a experiment

Yeah, I’ve done it quite a bit. The only issues I have ever heard of are if you put them on fresh too thick it can form a wet gooey mat at the bottom. You can either not care about this, or spread them thin each time so they dry out a bit or do something to purposely dry them out which is essentially hay.
