Loved the og one for some reason. Never played any others. Emulator of og one allowed saves at any spot, which was nice compared to the original saving scheme, though it did cheapen the struggle factor a lot

I played 1 on Switch and 2 on a Gamecube emulator, they are amazing games and so far 2 is my favorite. If the save states are an issue you can treat the in-game saving system as the only option. Personally, I do that for most games, but I confess I abuse save states when there's something I consider "bullshit" lol
The dungeons in original Metroid are waaaay more intense without save state. You get "unlucky" in a weird spot and it's all over
