I haven’t written my own client myself but my best recommendation is to start by reading NIP-01: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/01.md

I second this. Read the NIPs and look at the resources for nostr libraries. Bookmark it.

Nostr relays use web sockets which you can easily set up. I’m sure there are helper libraries for negotiating multiple relays etc.

Keep in mind I’m very rusty and am navigating my way through all of this too!
