Too many times in my life I've been bedazzled by battery-powered BS like gadgets or tools with Nickel-Cadmium batteries which would develop memory if not fully discharged, or battery-powered tools that required hours of charging to do minutes (or in some cases, seconds) of work. So I have to be careful to not believe the hype.

OTOH, I just watched a mechanic detail how he had to remove a gajillion different parts from an engine before he could replace the vehicle's timing chain. Every month I have to check at least four different fluid levels on five different vehicles in addition to drive belts, so there's that.

In my unique case, an ebike would be feasible since it takes longer to defrost my windows than it takes to drive to work, but I have no desire to become a hood ornament for a vehicle whose driver can't keep their dickbeaters off their phone.

I think there's probably a lot of FUD and malice on both sides of the debate. It's also a valid concern that a transition to EVs would be exploited by the control freaks to decide when/where we get to travel.

I recently got a goose egg while checking the oil in 20F weather when the car hood's gas struts failed to do their one job. Since then, I've been haunted by fantasies of a Tesla Cybertruck with a beefy generator strapped in the cargo bed.

I think if we're so concerned at the prospect of being enslaved by battery-powered products, we probably should have complained more loudly when the entire smartphone industry followed Apple's lead in making their batteries non-removable.
