NIPs 59 and 17 with kind 14 events for DMs but can still accept nip4. NIP44 for messages and file attachments.

Would you say primary use case is not 1-1 chat/DM, but rather sending e.g. files or info to yourself/others?

Yes, exactly. It works very well as a simple chat/DM app but it's initial purpose was as a sort of shared clipboard between devices.
