I've been thinking about how the people who are the most different from us probably have the most things that they can teach us. I mean genuinely different lives not fake different labels for people who live just like us. They have different knowledge and experience than us where the people who are similar to us are already knowing the same things that we know.

An example is the Amish and Mennonites. A common misconception is that they are anti technology, they are not. A better description is that they are deliberate. They have clearly defined vision of the type of life they intend to build for themselves. Then with each new technology they make a deliberate decision to include or exclude it from their lives based on how it helps or distracts from their vision for their life.

These decisions are made at the local order level which is why you see differences from community to community. They may decide to exclude it, they may let some members of the community test it and decide based on testers opinions. If they decide to include something, they will also often set rules about how it can be used. The rules are designed to make sure uses that are allowed align with their vision.

TLDR, I think my family may be stealing some ideas from the Amish going forward. Better defined vision for our lives and more deliberate decisions about what we allow into or exclude from our lives based on that vision.
