I think Big Tech smartphones started recording 2GB 10 second videos on purpose to make it harder for people to upload files on small websites.

All the big ones are selling cloud storage. That's why.
I run my own backup and yet g00gle still regularly asking to disable their cloud backup.
Re-encoding/compressing is really handy for that sort of stuff, Handbrake's web video presets and Squoosh's avif image preset work wonders to get file sizes down. I managed to get ~800mb of photos down to ~70mb for sharing on my site, and as a bonus you have to start zooming a bit on a 1080p display before you can see a deference side by side.
