Apparently Gab is down. Not sure why exactly but, whatever the reason, it's another reminder that centralised social media is dead in the water.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it. I have no idea tbh I've never used it. And Ive not heard anyone mention it for ages. Assumed it had died anyway really
Well since Jack and Co started banning people for political opinions or corpo state scrutiny, it was one of the few places you could turn to, especially during covid.
There are waves of interest in twitter alts and yeah gab has had a few as you mentioned. I've just not heard about it in the waves post-covid. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's still running. They lost a lot of users about a year or two ago due to some controversy about where the donors' money was being spent but they get fresh waves of new users coming in every time Twatter does a purge. I've had an account there since early 2017 but I rarely check in these days.

The Fediverse is a more resilient model but your account is still linked to a particular instance and they do get taken down. Nostr is the next logical step and even if I'm not all that convinced many of the developers currently at work on the protocol have much commitment to free speech, the code is there and sooner or later those who value freedom of expression will need to use it.

Back up and it looks like they finally put groups in the TL (not sure when that happened). I was looking recently and at the time gab only had about 3x the traffic of a fedi instance with 30k total users. Suspect that the twitter account reinstatements have killed gab and gab just doesn't know it yet.
Gab seems dead compared to what it was a few years ago. I see Torba is still claiming to have 4 million followers though.
