I have a hard time taking early Naruto seriously because it's straight up plagiarizing the 1999 Hunter x Hunter anime. Not just general concepts, but tons of visual motifs that only showed up together in that show.
Hunter x Hunter went dark in a very gritty way without taking it too far. When you look at Naruto as a derivative of that, it doesn't seem dark anymore, it just seems edgy.

I've only watched the newer HxH, although that's very dark as well obviously, it's not nearly as dark visually as the older one from what I've seen
I also hate how Naruto tries to be all dramatic but then its morals are the most corny basic bitch shit you've ever seen. The two are in conflict with one another. The powerful imagery does not match the weak script.
