Install: https://rectangleapp.com/ Mac's window management is weird.
System Settings > Desktop and Dock > Minimize windows into application icon: Check
System Settings > Desktop and Dock > Show recent applications in Dock: Uncheck

Always. Here are some more that can help you:
If you don't wanna see active apps on other Apple devices in a Dock:
System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff > Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices: Uncheck
If you prefer tabs in the app instead of separate windows:
System Settings > Desktop and Dock > Windows & Apps > Prefer tabs when opening documents: Always
If you use a mouse with a scroll wheel:
System Settings > Mouse > Natural scrolling: Unchecked
If you don't want that big pointer when you shake the mouse:
System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Shake mouse pointer to locate: Unchecked

If it's too old and doesn't get support from #Apple you can install #Ubuntu instead (as long as it's not M1,2, or 3 chip)
